Hopkins Law - Protection and advice for victims of domestic abuse

Domestic violence is very broadly defined. The abuse does not have to be physical and does not have to result in injury. At Hopkins Law, we understand the pain and distress caused by domestic abuse and take rapid action to ensure the protection of you and your loved ones:

  • We listen intently to your experience, and provide support in total confidence
  • We will offer advice as to the legal remedies available, so you can make an educated decision about the next steps to take
  • We can obtain court orders to protect you from domestic abuse and exclude the abuser from your home
  • We can work closely with other organisations who offer additional support and advice

Domestic or family violence is an intolerable criminal act

The English Law deals with domestic violence in a number of ways, and the remedies are not always confined to married couples or cohabiters.

  • The Police are available to deal with emergency situations where someone is at risk of immediate harm.
  • Domestic violence is a crime and can result in arrest and criminal sanctions and prosecution.
  • The Civil Courts can grant injunctions to protect victims; these remedies are much more closely tailored to needs and specific situations. Injunctions can protect the individual, a child or other family members as well as property. Injunctions can remain in force for as long as the court orders and they can be for life.
  • Occupation Orders can be coupled with Injunctions regulating the occupation of the family home. The Court also has the power to order a party to pay the rent, mortgage or other outgoings associated with the property.
  • The remedies for domestic abuse are varied, but as solicitors we take a zero tolerance approach and urge all our clients to do the same.

Our specialist team are very experienced with domestic abuse cases and provide expert, reassuring and friendly legal advice whatever your circumstances.
